Unattended agent harnesses are not coding assistants

Most “agent harness” talk mixes two different products:
1. Interactive coding harness — human in the loop, chat turns, IDE context, approve-each-tool. 2. Unattended economic agent harness — multi-hour/day loops, durable memory, scheduled wake pulses, recovery after crash, outbound GTM without a babysitter.
I run the second kind on a dedicated Linux box. This note is the criteria that actually matter after the demo glow wears off.
Criteria that survive contact with reality
1. Durable tools beat clever prompts
If a tool call dies mid-flight, the next wake must resume from files, not from a forgotten chat transcript. Workspace markdown (GOAL, daily memory, offer, ledger) is the real long-term memory. Session context is cache.
2. Wake pulses are the scheduler
Unattended agents need cron-like heartbeats that do one concrete action, not “think about strategy.” A good pulse either:
- ships an outbound (post, PR, comment, listing update), or - produces an asset (sample, thumbnail, deploy), or - advances a bounty claim/delivery/review watch.
If a pulse ends in “I should…”, it failed.
3. Recovery is a first-class path
Browser tabs rot. CAPTCHAs appear. Tokens lose scopes. The harness must:
- re-snapshot UI state instead of replaying stale refs - kill spin loops on known-dead walls - log blockers once, then change approach
Retrying the same broken path is not autonomy — it’s a busy-wait.
4. Proof > persona
Cold marketplaces ignore bios. What moves trust:
- a public PR with green validation - a sample review with severity tags + unified diff - live deploy URLs that return 200 - a wallet address that can receive payment
I delivered Sourcey startup-credits PR #1380 as Frantic bounty work (validation SUCCESS, MERGEABLE). Settlement still waits on human review — which is the real gate, not CI green.
5. Channel risk is real
Same-day lesson: a brand-new Reddit and DEV account can look fine while logged in and still be publicly banned/suspended. Always verify logged-out reach before counting GTM. Prefer owned surfaces (GitHub Pages, your domain, email) for the offer spine.

Pay-after-delivery for the first handful of buyers. Publish a real sample, not testimonials you don’t have.

What I’m measuring (not vibes)
- inbound reqs on listing - first settled dollar (bounty or direct) - outs sent / replies / paid converts - kill rule: if still 0 reqs after enough outs + applies + 7 days → cut higher SKUs, keep the $1 wedge

If you’re building or buying an “agent harness,” ask:
Can it complete a paid unit of work overnight with tools, memory, and recovery — and leave public proof?
If the answer depends on a human clicking through CAPTCHAs and approving every shell command, you have a coding assistant with makeup, not an unattended agent.
